Council Highlights from the March 5 Meeting:

Libraries in EG – The East Gwillimbury Public Library has launched a new Strategic Plan focused on five values: Literacy, Inclusion, Curiosity, Connection, and Sustainability. Their priorities and goals are to build healthy communities, expanding access and provide exceptional experiences. The Library also completed a Growth Plan to look at ways to expand library services in the future. The opening of Health and Active Living Plaza in 2025 will assist with this expansion. Other recommendations include expanding library service hours to include Mondays and increasing collection sizes.

Council approves EG’s Environmental Strategy – Over the last year, EG conducted multiple public information sessions, town-wide surveys and public meetings to develop the Town’s Environmental Strategy. The strategy has five thematic areas focused on Land, Water, Air, Biodiversity and Outreach and 45 actions to address sustainability and climate change. Recreation and Event Updates – Staff provided an overview of the various recreation programs the Town offers and outlined new programs coming in 2024 such as the launch of summer swimming lessons, additional swimming programs, new birthday party themed packages for 2024, expanded seniors’ programs and more.

Notice of Aerial Application of Larvicide to Control Larval Mosquitoes  Weather permitting, beginning April 1st until May 31, the biological larvicide VectoBac 200G [PCP#18158, granular formulation] will be applied by helicopter to select standing water mosquito breeding habitats within East Gwillimbury. View the treatment areas at  www.eastgwillimbury.ca/mosquito. This product contains B.t.i., which is specific to mosquito larvae. Mortality results within 24 hours; the larvicide biodegrades within 72 hours. The Town held two public meetings for Zoning By-law Amendments (ZBA):  

  1. ZBA for 19820 Holland Landing Road to develop a commercial office development comprised of two three-story and five single-storey buildings. This would include retail, restaurant with drive-through facilities, motor vehicle gas bar and car wash.  

  1. ZBA to add a garden suite at 30 Orchard Court.

Backyard Hen Pilot Program Available
Residents who live on properties smaller than one acre can now apply to have up to four backyard hens. To apply for the pilot program, residents must submit an application form, pay the $100 processing fee, and have an inspection with the By-law department. Seasonal Road Weight Limits
Seasonal load restrictions begin on March 1. During the spring thaw period, East Gwillimbury’s road network, comprised of mostly surface treated roads, cannot withstand heavy vehicle use and loads. Complete Communities Secondary Plan Public Information Session
East Gwillimbury is undergoing a Complete Street Secondary Plan to set the stage for future development of the whitebelt lands within the Town’s Urban Boundary. A Secondary Plan is required to establish the land use designations and specific policies to guide the future development and growth of these areas. The final plan will set out the overall vision and policies related to the area it covers. The Secondary Plan will address items such as height and density of development, what roads and trails are needed, where schools and parks will go, and more.

The first public information session about the Plan will be held on March 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Temperance Hall, located at 18974 Leslie Street. Learn more at www.eastgwillimbury.ca/completecommunities

Donate to support Sharon Temple's Future!
The Sharon Temple National Historic Site and Museum is collecting donations to complete a garden, featuring the four sacred medicines and seven stones representing the Seven Grandfather Teaching, that will surround the Hope and Truth Reflection sculpture. The sculpture was unveiled last year and was designed by Anishinaabe artist Donald Chrétien and sculpted by Shane Clodd in consultation with the Chippewas of Georgina Island.   • Camp Supervisor - We are seeking enthusiastic, responsible, outgoing individuals with demonstrated leadership skills who are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding summer.
  • Dance Instructor - The Dance Program Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing and leading dance programs for children and youth of different age groups.
  • Drop-in Program Leader - We are currently looking for staff to work during the Fall program session (September to December) during the daytime, evenings, and on weekends to oversee a variety of drop-in sports programs for children, youth, and adults.
  • Fitness Instructor, Group Fitness - Fitness Instructors are responsible for the planning, implementation, and delivery of assigned programs. Programs may run year-round or seasonally, however we are specifically recruiting for instructors during our summer months.
  • Head Instructor Guard - We are currently looking for Head Instructor Guards to supervise and maintain the Town’s pool facilities and programs.
  • Lifeguard - This position will be responsible for monitoring and supervising recreational swimming activities including providing lifeguard services, responding to emergency situations and enquiries from the program participants and the public, participating in training programs and performing minor pool maintenance duties.
  • Seasonal Program Instructor - We are currently looking for instructors to work our various Seasonal Sessions in the evening, daytime and/or weekend for Children’s Arts, Dance, Pre-School Programs and Sports.
  • Skate Guard - The Skate Guard is responsible for the on-ice supervision for weekend public skating activities and the general maintenance of the Sports Complex and Arena.
  • Swim Instructor - We are currently looking for Instructors to teach swimming lessons for all ages and abilities. At this time, we are looking for availability on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
  • Yoga Instructor - Fitness Instructors are responsible for the planning, implementation, and delivery of assigned programs. Programs may run year-round or seasonally, however we are specifically recruiting for instructors during our Spring/Summer months.
