Salt Smarter and Protect Our Waterways
Using salt on our roads, driveways and walkways keeps us safe in icy conditions; however, using too much can harm our environment. Once salt reaches lakes, rivers, or groundwater, it never disappears and can pollute drinking water, damage infrastructure, and threaten fish and plant life. Follow these tips to protect our watershed:

  • Clear snow before using salt on your driveway
  • Use a handful (approximately four tablespoons) of salt for a sidewalk square
  • After ice melts, sweep leftover salt to prevent runoff
  • Use alternatives like sand

For more tips, visit eastgwillimbury.ca/SnowClearing

Winter Weather Reminders
Follow these winter reminders when snow is in the forecast for your safety and to assist snow-clearing crews:

  • Place garbage and waste collection bins on your driveway
  • Do not park on the street
  • When parked, vehicles should not overhang onto the street or sidewalk
  • If you have a fire hydrant on or near your property, clear one metre of snow around it in case of an emergency
  • Ensure all outdoor vents and pipes along your home are clear of snow
