East Gwillimbury (EG) is making important upgrades to the EG Sports Complex located at 1914B Mount Albert Road to improve accessibility, safety, and overall user experience for all residents. 

The Town has been approved for $611,500 as a part of the Government of Ontario 2024-27 Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF). The fund supports projects that extend the lifespan of existing community sport and recreation facilities/spaces and improve local programming and accessibility features to meet community needs. This project with modernize key areas of the Sports Complex and ensure it is usable for all, regardless of disability status. 

The retrofits aim to improve the facility's accessibility by increasing its Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) rating. The RHFAC rating is a rating system that measures and certifies the level of meaningful access of buildings and sites. 

Facility Improvements

These improvements are part of the Town's ongoing commitment to creating inclusive public spaces where everyone can participate, connect, and enjoy recreational opportunities where they live. The facility will remain open during construction and the community can continue to enjoy available programs and activities. The project is anticipated to be completed by March 31, 2027, and improvements include: 

  • Washrooms;
  • Showers;
  • Change rooms;
  • Rink elevator; 
  • Internal doorways;
  • Building entrances;
  • Signage; 
  • Wayfinding and directory;
  • and more. 

Related Action Plans 

This project is a key initiative under the Town's Multi-year Accessibility Plan (MYAP), which outlines EG's commitment to ensuring that all municipal programs, services, and facilities are accessible and inclusive for residents of all abilities. It is also informed by the Town's 2024-2027 IIDEA (Indigeneity, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) Action Plan. Initiative #6.03 of the IIDEA Action Plan states that the Town will apply for grants that can improve the accessibility of EG spaces.
