What is the Active Transportation and Trails Plan?

The Active Transportation and Trails Plan (ATTP) is intended to be a long-term guiding document that provides the Town and its partners with the tools and strategies to enhance infrastructure, policy and programming for active transportation and trails in East Gwillimbury.

The Town of East Gwillimbury completed its first Active Transportation and Trails Master Plan in 2012. This Master Plan provided recommendations for a connected active transportation and trail network and also included design considerations for off and on-road trail and active transportation facilities, policies related to trail planning, potential education and promotion programs that support healthy living and a phased implementation strategy over 25+ years.

The active transportation and trail network component of the 2012 ATTMP has been updated in the 2026 ATTP to reflect the growth that has occurred within the Town since 2012, as well as lessons learned, best practices, new legislation and policies, as well as current design guidelines. This Active Transportation and Trail Network Update Report is intended to be read in conjunction with the 2012 ATTMP and supplement the recommendations.

What is active transportation?

Active transportation is defined as a human-powered form of travelling using muscle power.

Examples include:

  • Walking
  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Rollerblading
  • Skateboarding
  • Wheelchair or other mobility-support device
  • E-bike
  • Kick-style e-scooter

We can use these active modes of transportation in our everyday lives. From our commute to and from work and trips during work hours to destination-oriented trips like running errands and visiting friends. We can also reap the benefits from active commuting through active recreation (e.g., hiking and cycling).

This study focuses on non-motorized travel modes on EG's roads, parks, etc. and will help us:

  • Identify essential projects over the next 25 years.
  • Determine a strategy for maintenance.
  • Review the current standards, by-laws, and programs for trails, cycling and walking.

The plan will also support policies and programs to promote walking and cycling in the areas of education and safety.
