East Gwillimbury's (EG's) Municipal Council is comprised of the Mayor and six Councillors. The Mayor is elected at large and Councillors each represent a ward of the community. The Mayor is also the Town's representative at the regional level of government. Council is elected for a four-year term. The current term of Council began on November 15, 2022 and ends on November 14, 2026.

Council meetings are scheduled on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Special Meetings of Council may be called by the Mayor or upon the request of the majority of members of Council. Meetings are subject to change, please refer to the posted schedule.

In accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001, minutes are the official record of proceedings for Council and Committee meetings. Audio and video recordings of meetings are provided for convenience and do not constitute an official record of a meeting. Recordings are made only while the meetings are in session, and not when the meeting is recessed, adjourned or in closed session. In the event of a disruption in streaming or recording technology, Council and Committee meetings will continue in-person without streaming/recording.

Council Information Packages
Council Information Packages keep EG Council and the public informed on key issues. They consist of staff information items, general correspondence from other municipalities or jurisdictions, and correspondence received from York Region. Council Information Packages are typically distributed twice a month on Fridays.

Council Meeting Live Streaming Auto-Captions

EG live streams all Council meetings on the Town’s YouTube channel. For increased accessibility, YouTube’s live auto-caption function is enabled during all Council meetings. These auto-captions are also visible on archived meetings. If you have difficulty accessing the YouTube live auto-captions during a Council meeting, please email for assistance.

Procedural By-law

Municipalities are required under Section 238 of the Municipal Act, 2001 to pass a procedural by-law to guide how Council meetings operate. The by-law is used as a tool for Council to determine the structure of meetings, roles, and responsibilities of members, and voting procedures. The rules within the by-law ensure those who participate in Council meetings know what to do and that matters are dealt with in a fair and organized manner.

Procedural By-law Review

EG is in the process of reviewing its Procedural By-law to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and alignment with Council's objectives. The review will address challenges, enhance transparency, and improve decision-making during meetings. The current review process will allow staff and Council the opportunity to address recent legislative changes, review the by-law for clarity and user-friendliness, incorporate housekeeping updates and municipal best practices.
