Emancipation Day Flag Raising
Celebrate freedom by joining Mayor and Council at the Emancipation Day Flag Raising Ceremony at the Civic Centre at 3:30 p.m. on July 28. Observed annually on August 1, Emancipation Day commemorates the abolition of slavery in the British Empire and honours the legacy and contributions of Black communities.
Attendees will enjoy an African drumming performance by Negus Medhin and complimentary refreshments. Following the ceremony, attendees can shop and support the following local Black-owned businesses participating in Music and Market Night:

Hydro One Construction: Highway 48
Hydro One is upgrading the existing distribution line along Highway 48, from near Vivian Road in the Town of Stouffville to Mount Albert Road in East Gwillimbury. Preliminary work is already underway, with the project expected to be complete by the end of this year. As part of the preparation, forestry crews are meeting with adjacent property owners to identify any vegetation overhanging the existing Hydro One corridor or trees that may need to be removed to safely carry out the work. Tree removals on private property will only occur with the landowner’s prior consent. The line upgrade work will be completed within the existing Ministry of Transportation road allowance.

Curbside Giveaway Days
Are you looking to declutter, reduce waste, and give unwanted household items a second life? York Region residents can place unwanted items at the curb labelled “FREE” for neighbours and community members to take at no cost. Any items not claimed must be brought back inside by the end of the day. Participants are encouraged to clearly label giveaway items, keep non-giveaway items away from the curb to avoid confusion, and only take items marked free. Visit york.ca/Bindicator for information on how to donate, recycle, or properly dispose of any remaining items.
