The Town of East Gwillimbury is asking residents and businesses to participate in a short online internet speed test to help identify gaps in local broadband service.

“We’ve made strong progress expanding internet service in East Gwillimbury, with more than 90 per cent coverage across the community,” said Mayor Virgina Hackson. “Thanks to the work of YorkNet, our regional partners, fibre networks continue to grow, but there are still opportunities to expand service further and ensure all residents have reliable connectivity.”

To support future improvements, the Town is encouraging residents to participate in the Canadian Internet Registration Authority’s (CIRA) Internet Performance Test. CIRA is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that uses web-based mapping technology to identify gaps in internet coverage.

Residents can complete the free test from their home or business in just a few minutes. The test connects a user’s device to Canadian servers and measures real-world internet performance, including download speed, upload speed, and connection quality. The results are anonymous and added to a map that helps identify areas where internet service may be slower or less reliable than expected.

Residents should take the test at home while connected to your personal wi-fi for accurate results. To take the test, visit performance.cira.ca/eg/.

The Town does not build or fund broadband infrastructure directly. Instead, this community-generated data will help EG better understand where connectivity gaps exist and advocate for improved connectivity and expanded service in East Gwillimbury.

Even if residents have taken a speed test before, repeating the test helps ensure the data remains current and accurate. The more recent and consistent the data, the stronger the Town’s ability to advocate for improved internet service in the community.
