The Town of East Gwillimbury (EG) is inviting the community to help shape the future of the Civic Centre site on Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Civic Centre (in the Lower Atrium), located at 19000 Leslie St. The drop-in style open house is an opportunity for the community to learn more about the project, review concept plans, speak with the project team and provide feedback that will help guide the future design of the site.
The Civic Centre Site Revitalization focuses on enhancing the land surrounding the Civic Centre. Improvements will transform the space into a dynamic community hub, with enhanced public spaces, cultural features, and year-round amenities. Potential amenities include event space, refrigerated ice surface, amphitheatre and stage, pollinator gardens, farm-themed playground, space for public art, relocation of heritage properties, and mixed uses (on site) to include residences and commercial or local businesses and more. The project does not include any expansion or changes to the Civic Centre Municipal Office.
“The lands around the Civic Centre are an important focal point in our community and help provide a welcoming space to bring our community together,” says Mayor Virginia Hackson. “This project is about building a space that allows residents to come together right where they live. There are many exciting options for residents to consider, and I encourage everyone to join us and share their vision for this space.”
The Civic Centre Site Revitalization will be fully funded through development charges, which means there will be no cost to taxpayers. This project is not the first project in the area to be development charge funded. Other improvements in the area include the Children of Peace (COP) Park, Holding Hope public art display, multi-use path bridge connection from COP to the Civic Centre, the renovation of 19040 Leslie Street, and the green accessibility courtyard.
Residents will continue to have opportunities to learn more about the status of the project and provide input. Staff will use the feedback from the open house to adjust the design and report back to Council and the community in 2027. If you are unable to attend the open house in person, feedback can be emailed to the project team at parks@eastgwillimbury.ca.
