Purpose of this Notice

The Town of East Gwillimbury has initiated an HCD Study under Section 41, Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act for the historic community of Sharon.

About the Project

An HCD Study is the first step in understanding the historic significance of an area, in this case the historic Sharon Village area. This Study involves historical and documentary research, photographic documentation of the area and public participation. It helps evaluate the merit to designating an HCD and developing an HCD Plan. The study area focuses on Leslie Street as a key historic core of the community.

36 properties in the HCD Study Area are listed on the Town of East Gwillimbury’s Municipal Heritage Register under Section 27, Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. Two properties are designated under Section 29, Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. This area contains a concentration of cultural heritage resources and has a generally cohesive, harmonious streetscape.

The Town of East Gwillimbury has contracted LHC Heritage Planning and Archaeology Inc. and TMHC Inc. to complete this project.

Project Purpose

This project is being undertaken to examine the viability of an HCD in Sharon and includes:

  • Research and fieldwork to determine if the area has cultural heritage value and warrants designation as an HCD
  • Community consultation to assess local interest in designation
  • Evaluation of properties in the HCD Study Area and the HCD Study Area as a whole for cultural heritage value or interest
  • Recommendations on a potential HCD boundary
  • Recommendations on the objectives of the designation and the heritage conservation district plan
  • Recommendations on any required changes to the Town’s Official Plan and any relevant By-laws

If it is determined that there is merit for designation as an HCD, an HCD Plan establishing policies, urban design guidelines and best practices for managing growth while maintaining and respecting the heritage character of the community will be prepared.
