The image is of the water level in Lake Simcoe

Attention EG! Lake Simcoe water levels are well above average for this time of year. Shoreline flooding is imminent or already occurring in shoreline communities. Residents, especially in the historically flood-prone areas, are advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their pets, and their property. Property owners in low-lying shoreline areas should prepare for potential flooding.

Expected Conditions:

The water level in Lake Simcoe is expected to continue rising. Localized flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to the Lake Simcoe shoreline has already been reported for areas including Jackson’s Point, Georgina and Ramara. The combination of high water levels, rainfall and wind is also expected to increase the risk of overtopping or breaching of dikes and berms protecting low-lying agricultural areas including the Keswick and Colbar polders.

Water and Flooding Safety Tips:

  • Exercise extreme caution near water
  • Keep children away from watercourses and supervise closely
  • Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare for flooding and possible sandbagging
  • Evacuation may be required if dikes or berms fail or overtop
  • Be mindful of road closures and adhere to detour signs if water is on the road
  • At home, check your sump pump regularly to ensure it is working properly. Make sure your pump is discharging at a high point on your lawn to ensure it does not redirect back into your basement. It is advised to have a backflow preventer on your sump pump discharge line
  • If you experience flooding in your basement, be mindful of electrical hazards that may be present
