The Town of East Gwillimbury (EG) is investing in important upgrades to the EG Sports Complex to improve accessibility, safety and the overall experience for all residents.

The Town will receive $611,500 through the Government of Ontario’s 2024–27 Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF). The fund supports projects that extend the lifespan of existing community sport and recreation facilities and improve local programming, and accessibility features to meet community needs. The project includes improvements to:

  • Customer Service and concession counters
  • Washrooms
  • Showers
  • Change rooms
  • Rink elevator
  • Internal doorways
  • Building entrances
  • Signage and wayfinding

“Creating accessible spaces is about making sure every resident has the opportunity to participate and enjoy recreation in our community,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “We are grateful to the Province of Ontario for this important funding support to help make meaningful improvements to the Sports Complex. These upgrades will make the facility more welcoming and accessible for all residents, regardless of their disability status.”

"These upgrades to the East Gwillimbury Sports Complex mean more residents will have the opportunity to participate in sport and recreation, regardless of ability," said Natalie Pierre, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Sport. "Projects like this are exactly why our government introduced the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund, and why we're investing a total of $500 million in the program — to help communities extend the lifespan of facilities they rely on, and give more people the chance to use them."

Work on the project is scheduled to begin September 8, 2026, with completion anticipated in early 2027. Once construction is complete, EG will seek an improved Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) rating. RHFAC is a rating system that measures and certifies the level of meaningful access of buildings and sites.

The EG Sports Complex will remain open during construction. The Town will communicate any temporary impacts to facility users as work progresses. The project is a key initiative under the Town’s 2023 to 2027 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan (MYAP), which outlines EG’s commitment to ensuring municipal programs, services and facilities are accessible and inclusive for residents of all abilities. The project also supports the Town’s 2024 to 2027 IIDEA (Indigeneity, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility) Action Plan. Initiative 6.03 of the IIDEA plan commits the Town to applying for grants that can improve the accessibility of EG spaces.
