After hearing resident feedback and conducting a traffic safety review, a new all-way stop was installed at the intersection of King Street East and Viscount Way/Hammill Heights.
The Town completed a traffic safety review on King Street East to analyze traffic habits in the area. The study looked at how many vehicles use King Street East each day, how fast they drive, and whether current traffic controls are working as intended.
The traffic studies were completed at several locations along King Street East, including near Robert Munsch Public School. The results showed that traffic volumes and speeds along King Street East are generally in line with what is expected for a local neighbourhood road, with most drivers travelling close to the posted 40 km/h speed limit.
Several safety measures are already in place near Robert Munsch Public School, including a permanent speed display sign that shows drivers how fast they are going and a school crossing guard before and after school. These measures will remain in place and continue to support student and pedestrian safety.
“Resident safety continues to be a priority which is proven with the installation of this all-way stop,” said Virginia Hackson, East Gwillimbury Mayor. “This review was undertaken in response to feedback received from residents and the installation of an all-way stop at King Street East and Viscount Way/ Hammill Heights is an important step to improve safety in this area.”
The estimated cost of the improvement is $6,000, funded through the Town’s Safer Streets Program. Learn more about the Safer Streets Program at eastgwillimbury.ca/SaferStreets.
