School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week is June 1 to 5, 2026, and the Town of East Gwillimbury (EG) is proud to recognize and thank its school crossing guards for their ongoing commitment to keeping students and families safe.
School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week is a week-long event dedicated to recognizing and honouring the essential contributions of crossing guards in our communities. This initiative goes beyond a simple "thank you" and strives to create a heightened awareness of the critical role these unsung heroes play in promoting safe and active travel to school.
Each school day, crossing guards help ensure safe passage for pedestrians at key intersections across the community. Through all weather conditions, their vigilance, care and consistency provide peace of mind to families and contribute to safer neighbourhoods.
“School crossing guards play an essential role in our community,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “Their dedication helps protect our most vulnerable road users and supports a culture of safety in East Gwillimbury. We are grateful for the work they do each and every day.”

The Town also reminds all drivers and cyclists to do their part in supporting safe school travel. When a crossing guard displays their stop sign, motorists are required to come to a complete stop and wait until all pedestrians have safely crossed before proceeding.
EG thanks its crossing guards for their dedication and encourages the community to show appreciation by slowing down, staying alert and following their direction.
