East Gwillimbury Council doing a ribbon cutting

The Town of East Gwillimbury is excited to celebrate the official opening of the Civic Centre streetscape beautification and Multi-Use Pathway. This is the Town’s second park opening of the year, with an additional nine celebrations planned throughout the summer. Both projects are located near the Town’s main office located on Leslie Street, next to the Sharon Temple.

The Civic Centre streetscape project was completed in partnership with The Regional Municipality of York to enhance and beautify the corners of Leslie St. and Mount Albert Rd. while building on the Sharon Gateway vision. The project cost $500,000 to complete, $358,000 from the Town and $142,000 from York Region’s Municipal Streetscape Partnership Program grant. Updates made to the area include enhanced interlocked pavers, pedestal clock, masonry stone walls, landscaping and EG's first community wayfinding sign.

The multi-use pathway and box culvert features asphalt paving, crossing over an existing stream and a key trail connection from the Sharonview Multi-Use Trail to the Civic Centre precinct and Children of Peace Park. The park also serves as a trail head for the Sharon Creek trail system. The total project cost of $200,000 was funded entirely through development charges.

Enhancing our infrastructure and creating connections between our facilities, parks and amenities are all key pieces in building a complete community,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “I’m extremely proud of the enhancements and additions we’re making to our community and how we are working with partners like York Region.”

Development charges (DC’s) play an important role in our community as it grows. The DC’s the Town collects fund the amenities we use and enjoy every day including our roads, parks, trails, and facilities.

Residents are invited to join the Town for its Summer of Parks celebrations throughout EG. To find information on upcoming park and trail openings, visit the Parks page
