Smoking materials are the number one cause of fatal fires in Ontario. Don’t let smoking burn you down, be a smart smoker.

Safety tips
  • Smoke outside
  • Keep all lighting materials (lighters, matches) up high and in a locked cabinet away from children.
  • Only have 1 or 2 lighting materials in the home at a time.
  • Put all cigarettes out in a deep, sturdy ashtray.
  • Keep these away from anything that can burn.
  • Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grasses, leaves or other things that could ignite easily.
  • When discarding butts and ashes make sure they are completely extinguished. You can use water or sand to ensure they are out. 
E-Cigarettes
  • Fires have occurred while batteries were being charged.
  • Fires have also occurred while the device is being transported.
  • Battery failures have led to small explosions.
  • Never leave charging e-cigarettes vaping devices unattended.
  • E-cigarettes and vaping devices should always be used with caution
  • Keep these devices away from flammable materials, such as paper, fabric and chemicals.
  • Dispose batteries properly
  • Recycle old batteries or take them to a battery disposal centre. NEVER throw them in the trash.
  • Do not charge your e-cigarette with a phone or tablet charger.
  • Protect your e-cigarette from extreme temperatures
