Smoking materials are the number one cause of fatal fires in Ontario. Don’t let smoking burn you down, be a smart smoker.

Safety Tips

  • Smoke outside.
  • Keep all lighting materials (lighters, matches) up high and in a locked cabinet away from children.
  • Only have one or two lighting materials in the home at a time.
  • Put all cigarettes out in a deep, sturdy ashtray.
  • Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grasses, leaves or other things that could ignite easily.
  • When discarding butts and ashes make sure they are completely extinguished. You can use water or sand to ensure they are out. 

E-Cigarette and Vape Safety Tips

Fires and small explosions can happen while using, charging, or transporting e-cigarette and vaping devices.

  • Always follow manufacture’s recommendations.
  • Always use charger that was provided with the device.
  • Avoid charging while sleeping or unattended.
  • Replace the battery if wet or damaged.
  • If a device is kept in your pocket, use a protective case. Batteries that encounter metal objects likes coins can cause sparks.
