A marriage licence is required to get married in the Province of Ontario. East Gwillimbury (EG) issues marriage licences and also hosts Civic Ceremonies by appointment.

Marriage Licences

A Marriage Licence Application can be completed online or in-person at Customer Service at the Civic Centre. After completing the application, please book an appointment to finalize and review the application.

To receive a marriage licence, both applicants must be 16 years or older. Applicants under 18 years old will need written consent from their parents or legal guardians.

What to bring to the appointment:

  • A completed Marriage Licence Application, signed by both applicants
  • A non-refundable payment of $164.90 (payable by cash, cheque, bank draft, money order, credit card or debit)
  • Proof of divorce, if applicable
  • Two pieces of government-issued identification for both applicants. One piece of identification must include your photo
Identification Requirements
  • Identification must be valid and original (we will not accept photocopies, scanned images or pictures on electronic devices).
  • Identification must provide your legal name and date of birth.
  • Your first and last names must match on the two pieces of ID that are presenting.
  • To have your middle name(s) included on your marriage licence it must also appear on both pieces of ID.
  • ID on the list can be from any country, as long as it is government issued.
  • If the ID is not in English, a written translation from a certified translator is required.
  • Expired identification will not be accepted

Marriage Licence Requirements

To receive a marriage licence, both applicants must be:

  • 16 years or older. Applicants under 18 years old will need written consent from their parents or legal guardians.
Previously Divorced

If you or your partner was previously divorced within Canada, you will need to bring the original or a court-certified copy of one of the following documents:

  • The final decree
  • The final judgment
  • A certificate of divorce

If an applicant was divorced outside of Canada, please visit Service Ontario for requirements.

Once issued, a Marriage Licence is valid for use anywhere in Ontario for a period of 90 days from the date of issue. After the Marriage Licence has been signed and submitted, visit Service Ontario to get a Marriage Certificate.

Civil Ceremonies

EG offers civil marriage ceremony services most Fridays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre (19000 Leslie Street, Sharon).

Two witnesses must be present during the ceremony (family or friends). If you wish to have Town staff act as a witness there is a fee of $65.40 per witness.

  • A valid Ontario Marriage Licence. If you do not have one, please apply here.
  • Payment of $326.40 plus tax (payable by cash, cheque, bank draft, money order, credit card or debit) is required.
  • Two pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married. One piece of identification must include your photo.
  • A completed Civil Marriage Questionnaire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Can Perform a Marriage Ceremony?
An authorized official needs to marry you to ensure that a marriage is performed properly and legally. There are two types of marriage ceremonies performed in Ontario; Religious marriage: a recognized religious official marries you; and Civil marriage: a judge, justice of the peace or authorized municipal clerk marries you, often at a local municipal office or city hall
What Type of Ceremony Does EG Provide?
The Town provides a non-religious ceremony that reflect the couple's choices and desires. All elements of the ceremony are thoroughly discussed with the couple in the pre-ceremony consultation. Remember, this is your day and you get to choose how you want it celebrated! 
General Ceremony Information
  • Wedding rings are not required for the ceremony.
  • Ceremonies can be as formal or informal as requested.
  • The ceremony duration varies depending on what has been planned with the Officiant; generally, they run between five and 20 minutes, including the signing of the register.
  • Personal, non-religious vows can be accommodated during the ceremony along with non-religious readings.
  • Photographs and video may be taken at any time. WiFi is available to connect to for video calling.
  • Music can be played. Please arrange during the consultation.
  • To ensure the wedding ceremony proceeds smoothly, both parties are required to attend a pre-ceremony consultation with Town staff to arrange the details of your ceremony.
