East Gwillimbury (EG) maintains all Town roads and drainage systems through regular inspections and routine maintenance. Roads are inspected once a week, and drainage systems are inspected annually.

Spring Maintenance

Road and sidewalk surfaces are inspected regularly by EG staff. Potholes are repaired and sections of roadways are resurfaced as needed to eliminate holes, ponding areas, slope issues and other defects that effect drainage and drivability. Shoulders receive additional gravel and are regraded to improve drainage and traffic safety.

Roads

Spring maintenance on EG roads includes:

  • Pavement section resurfacing
  • Pothole repair
  • Roadside grass cutting
  • Street sweeping
  • Street sign replacement and inspections
  • Catch basin cleaning and inspections
  • Culvert inspections
  • Roadside ditch inspections and maintenance
  • Stormwater management pond inspections
  • Guiderail inspections and maintenance

Sidewalks

Spring maintenance on EG sidewalks includes:

  • Inspections for damage
  • Section repairs (prioritizing trip or fall hazards)
  • Patching repairs

Seasonal load restrictions begin on March 1 to help protect EG's roads during the spring thaw. As the ground thaws, many of the Town's roads cannot safely support heavy vehicles.

Commercial vehicles and trailers weighing more than five tonnes (11,000 pounds) per axle are not permitted on roads with load restriction signs or on designated restricted truck routes. These restrictions also apply to non-truck routes. Vehicles that exceed the weight limit may be fined.

Load restrictions are removed once road conditions have improved and the pavement has regained its strength.

Boulevards

The Boulevard By-law regulates the construction, maintenance, and protection of municipal boulevards in EG. It outlines what landscaping and features are permitted on boulevards.

The by-law does not regulate driveway repairs or resurfacing. Learn more about widening a driveway on the Entrance Approval page.

The Boulevard By-law allows:

  • Herbaceous plants that do not exceed 45 cm in height or interfere with drainage.
  • Landscaping features or objects under 20 cm in height, placed between 0.6 m from the sidewalk and 1.8 m from the road or curb.
  • Replacing a driveway surface with concrete, asphalt, or unit pavers, as long as the driveway is not widened.

The Boulevard By-law does not allow:

  • Planting crops, vegetables, grains, or other non-herbaceous plants on the boulevard.
  • Placing objects within 0.6 m of a sidewalk.
  • Anything that blocks sightlines for pedestrians, cyclists, or drivers.
  • Anything that interferes with snow removal operations.
  • Anything that could cause injury or damage to people or property.
