Together with heritage planning consultant Goodeve & Associates, the Town of East Gwillimbury is developing a Built Heritage Strategy. This project will help guide how we identify, preserve, and celebrate cultural heritage across the community.

Public Information Session

Public Information Sessions were held on October 29, 2025 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Civic Centre, located at 19000 Leslie Street in Sharon.

Background

As outlined in the 2022 to 2026 Strategic Plan, Council is committed to taking a responsible and balanced approach to growth management. A key part of this is ensuring we preserve the Town’s cultural heritage and establish policies and guidelines outlining what is regarded as acceptable and desirable change.

To date there have been various initiatives undertaken to advance heritage preservation, but EG does not have a cohesive, comprehensive strategy that specifically identifies heritage goals and objectives for the Town as a whole. The strategy development would directly engage Council to identify long-term goals and specific priorities.

Project Scope

The Built Heritage Strategy will:

  1. Engage the public and set priorities
  2. Develop policy recommendations
  3. Recommend programming and resources

Project History

Related staff reports and memos

In April 2024, the Town retained Goodeve & Associates to lead the preparation of the Built Heritage Strategy.

Council approved the project in December 2023, for commencement in 2024.
