Why do we celebrate Fire Prevention Week?

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) is held during the week of October 9 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This year, FPW takes place from October 9 – 15, 2022, and this year's theme is "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape."

During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers can learn important fire and life safety tips to stay safe in case of an emergency. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.
