What is the Mount Albert
Downtown Revitalization Project?

 Mount Albert Downtown Revitalization is a collaborative and comprehensive project that aims to revitalize the downtown Mount Albert/Centre Street area through infrastructure improvements. The project area includes Main Street, Bank Street, and Centre Street, extending from just south of Main Street to just north of Mill Street Park, as shown in the image below.
The Mount Albert Downtown Revitalization Project will improve the economic, physical and social well-being of the local community. 

The Revitalization Project will include:

  • Road resurfacing and full road reconstruction 
  • Storm sewer/road drainage improvements 
  • Replace/upgrades to sidewalks to fill in missing links, improve connectivity and accessibility  
  • Replace/upgrade/relocation of overhead hydro poles to eliminate conflicts with sidewalks 
  • Public realm improvements including decorative streetlighting, street scape, amenities, etc. 
  • Formal lay-by parking and parallel parking

The first round of engagement for the Mount Albert Downtown Revitalization Project included a drop-in Open House on June 15, 2022, at the Mount Albert Community Centre from 4 to 8 p.m. A range of informative and interactive boards were displayed to share information and collect feedback from the community.

The second round of engagement for the Mount Albert Downtown Revitalization Project included a drop-in Open House on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Mount Albert Community Centre (53 Main Street, Mount Albert). A range of informative and interactive boards were displayed to share information and collect feedback from the community.

The Mount Albert Downtown Revitalization project Community BBQ was hosted by the Revitalization contractor, Primrose Contracting Inc. on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Mount Albert Community Centre Picnic Shelter (53 Main Street, Mount Albert).

Businesses located within the project area have access to free, one-on-one support from the Town’s Economic Development team. This includes mentorship, marketing guidance, and connections to other programs to help you navigate this transition.

Project Background
The Mount Albert Downtown Revitalization Strategy and Community Improvement Plan was approved in August 2014. The Plan articulated a vision for downtown Mount Albert and established a strategy for revitalization and economic development. The vision focused on providing:    
  • A destination for residents and visitors characterized by an attractive mix of business, services, amenities, and vibrant public spaces that support economic activity and community participation 
  • A place to provide services to the residents or Mount Albert and beyond 
  • A central gathering place for the community 
  • An excellent mix of businesses and services that supports the needs of the community

Funding
This project has been co-funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). This is a Federal program (managed by the Province) designed to create long-term economic growth, build inclusive, sustainable and resilient communities and support a low-carbon economy. The total eligible project costs are approximately $2.7 million, which will be covered by the Provincial/Federal grant. The Town will contribute approximately $454,000.

  • Utility relocation construction has commenced and will continue from mid-June 2025 until Q3 2025.

  • Continued layouts on-site for proposed hydro pole locations (Centre St and Main St).

  • Hydro One's contractor, Kawartha Utility Services (KUS), are starting construction on hydro poles, beginning with work along Centre Street and Main Street.

  • The Revitalization construction contractor (Primrose) will begin mobilizing to the area later this week.
  • Initial activities through the contractor will begin on Main Street and include construction surveys/layouts, traffic control measures, vacuum excavations, silt fencing and tree protection zones.
  • The Town parking lot on the north side of Main Street, 75m west of Centre Street will be temporarily closed to the public as of Wednesday Sept 24, 2025 until Fall 2026. This parking lot will be used by the contractor for their trailer, equipment and materials. Users of the parking lot may choose to park at alternate Town parking lots including the Mount Albert Community Centre or Vivian Creek Park.
Week of September 29, 2025
  • The contractor is continuing to install tree protection zones, signage, surveys/layouts and traffic control measures along Main Street.
  • Minor tree trimming and grubbing along Main Street.
  • Later this week, preparation for Main Street road and storm sewer works.
Week of October 6, 2025
  • The contractor is continuing to complete surveys/layouts onsite along Main Street.
  • Removal limits for curb, road and sidewalks will be painted out along Main Street.
  • Main Street driveway culverts will be inspected.
Week of October 13, 2025
  • Hydro-vac excavations continue, to mitigate underground conflicts.
  • Concrete storm structures are being delivered to the project site.
Week of October 20, 2025
  • Driveway culvert and minor ditch cleanouts to occur along the west half of Main Street.
  • Excavations will begin on the east half of Main Street for storm sewers, roads, curbs, sidewalk and the end of driveways.
  • Following the excavations, granular material will be placed and compacted.
Week of October 27, 2025
  • Removal and replacement of concrete curb/gutters and sidewalks along the west half of Main Street.
  • A few driveway culverts and driveway aprons will be replaced along the west half of Main Street.
  • Excavations continuing along the east half of Main Street for storm sewers, roads, curbs, sidewalk and the end of driveways.
  • Following the excavations, granular material will be placed and compacted.
Next Steps
  • The Revitalization contractor (Primrose) has mobilized to the area as of late September 2025.
  • Primrose has begun the construction activities along Main Street from Centre Street to King Street. The east half of the road is receiving revitalization scope matching the project drawings, the west half of the road is receiving a road rehabilitation matching the existing configuration, including upgraded sidewalk ramps at intersections.
  • Following the completion of Main Street, the contractor is expecting to begin the revitalization scope on Bank Street later this fall, pending weather conditions.
