Marriage Licence

NOTE: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Ontario has amended the Marriage Act that allow couples to use their expired marriage licence if the following conditions are met:

  •  The licence was issued between December 1, 2019 and July 24, 2020; and

Since the license was issued;

  • It has not been used (i.e., the couple has not married each other),
  • Neither party has married anyone else, and
  • Neither party has legally changed their name.

If you meet all of these conditions, your licence will be valid for until an additional 2 years from July 24, 2020 (the end of the COVID-19 Declaration of Emergency in Ontario).

Otherwise, a Marriage Licence is valid for use anywhere in Ontario for a period of 90 days from the date of issue.

Marriage Licence Applications are available online and from Customer Service at the Civic Centre.

The Marriage Licence Application must be completed and signed by both applicants. Either one or both applicants may bring in the completed application and 2 pieces of government-issued identification (driver’s licence, passport etc.) for both applicants.  One piece of identification for each applicant must be photo identification.

If an applicant was divorced within Canada, you will need to bring the original or a court-certified copy of one of the following documents: the final decree; the final judgment; a certificate of divorce.

If an applicant was divorced outside of Canada, please refer to the ServiceOntario website for requirements.

An appointment is required. To book an appointment, please contact Customer Service at 905-478-4282.

For the appointment you must bring:
1. Payment for the Marriage Licence of $137.00 payable by cash, cheque, bank draft, money order, credit card or     debit card.
2. A completed Marriage Licence Application; signed by both applicants
3. Required identification for both applicants
4. Proof of divorce, if required
