Take action York

East Gwillimbury Emergency Services is teaming up with fire departments across York Region to encourage residents to take action on fire safety.

Every year we lose people to fire in Ontario. In 2016, 102 people lost their lives, and many more were injured in home fires.

There are three key actions you can take to protect your family from fire.

The leading cause of fires in East Gwillimbury is unattended cooking – stay in the kitchen and watch what you heat. If you must leave, turn your stove off.

Prevent Cooking Fires

Smoke alarms will activate in less than a minute from the start of a fire and give your family the advanced warning you need to evacuate safely. You are required to have a smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test smoke alarms monthly and replace them when they are 10 years old.

Protect your family from fire

Prepare and practice an escape plan with everyone in your home. Know two ways out from each room. Also be sure to have an outside meeting place.
