Museums & Galleries

Museums in the area are devoted to the engaging history of those who endured the hardships of pioneering in the 19th century,  The museums preserve the heritage of the local communities for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.  Visiting museums is a good learning experience for the whole family. Housed in historic buildings, all feature either permanent or changing exhibits, with temporary displays and special events supplementing the exhibit themes.

East Gwillimbury

Sharon Temple Museum. Unusual 1830's temple, plus five other buildings. Open May through October, Wednesday through Sunday. Gift shop and special events. 18994 Leslie Street Sharon. 905-478-2389.

Aurora Museum. Wednesday through Saturday and on Sunday afternoons. Local history museum in 1886 school. Changing exhibits and research facilities. Free admission. 22 Church Street, Aurora. 905-727-8991.

Eildon Hall Museum. Located at Sibbald Point Provincial Park, Sutton West. 905-722-3268.

Elman W. Campbell Museum. Visit Newmarket's past through exhibits, programs and special events in historic 1884 Registry Office. Open year round, Tuesday through Saturday. 134 Main Street South, Newmarket. 905-953-5341.

King Township Museum. Open Sundays, 1-5 pm in July and August and by appointment. Features local artifacts, also on-site King Station (c1852), Canada's oldest standing railway station. 1850 Church, 1860 Church. Free admission. 2920 King Road, King City. 905-833-2331.

Latcham Gallery. Public gallery with monthly exhibitions plus workshops, talks and special events. Come and view the permanent collection of outdoor sculpture. 6240 Main Street, Stouffville. 905-640-2395.
