Virginia Hackson, Mayor

Virginia Hackson is in her second term as Mayor for the Town of East Gwillimbury. 

In 2001, after retiring from 30 years of municipal management, Virginia turned her focus to community service serving the people of East Gwillimbury as a Councillor for three terms. She understands how important providing quality Town services are for all citizens, and balancing growth while preserving the Town’s natural environment and cultural heritage.

Virginia has been recognized for her significant contributions to the community including the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for Community Service, In Celebration of Women and the Rural Government Award. She has lent her expertise to the Human Strategies Planning Coalition representing Arts, Culture and Heritage and she served as Executive Director of Artslink York Region, fostering and promoting creativity.

Virginia has represented East Gwillimbury on the Board of Directors for the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority since 2001 and was Chair from January 2006 to January 2013. It was under her leadership that the LSRCA won the Thiess International Riverprize, the world’s most prestigious award for excellence in watershed management. She has also held the positions of Vice-Chair and Treasurer for Conservation Ontario.

Mayor Hackson represents the Town on York Region Council, is currently the Chair of the Audit Committee and a member of both the Broadband Strategy and Senior’s Housing Strategy Task Forces. In addition, Virginia is a member of the Board for the Housing York Region, Cedar Centre (formerly York Region Abuse Program), Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Royal Oak Seniors Board and the York Region Police Services Board for which she was elected Vice Chair in 2016.

Virginia is a lifelong learner, committed to continuous improvement through personal growth. She holds a BA from the University of Waterloo, as well as a B Ed, a Master’s Certificate in Municipal Management from York University and a Recreation Diploma from Conestoga College.

Mayor Hackson has lived in the same home in East Gwillimbury for 35 years and enjoys spending time with her Mom, three grown sons and their families.
