Marlene Johnston, Councillor

Councillor Johnston Bio ImageCouncillor Marlene Johnston was first elected to Council in 1985 and is now serving in her 3rd decade as an elected official. She served as Deputy Mayor for 6 years. Councillor Johnston enjoys contributing to our Town's communication strategies to ensure residents have the benefit of open dialogue and the opportunity to shape the character of our future. Receiving public input in all that we do gives us the opportunity to explore new ideas and expand our knowledge base so that we can deal effectively and creatively with imminent growth. She is adamant in her belief that we must always remember that Council’s most important jobs are “representation” and “policy making”. Good policies lead to ensuring that all residents are treated fairly.

Councillor Johnston was presented with the “In Celebration of Women” political municipal award for her commitment to the environment. In this term of Council, she will chair the issues of Community Infrastructure and Environmental Services in Council, and will be the Council liaison to the Library Board and the Farmers’ Market Committee, which she was instrumental in establishing.

Councillor Johnson graduated from the Municipal Administration program with the Association of Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario. Marlene has also earned a Master’s Certificate in Municipal Leadership from the Schulich School of Business through York University.

Along with her husband Alvin, the Johnston’s have been residents of East Gwillimbury since 1972. The Johnston family includes Sean and Lori, Bob and Val, and granddaughters Alysia, Sheridan, Stephanie, Tori-Linn, and Shay-Lynn.
