Thinking Green Initiatives

Our "Thinking Green!" Program is a comprehensive sustainability program committed to protecting the environment, enhancing economic prosperity, and improving the health and lifestyle of our community.  “Thinking Green!” is about policies and actions that make sense, and when added together will make a difference.  Listed here are some of the things we have already committed to or are working on:

  • The LEED policy (Leadership in Energy & Environment Design) will provide the employment sector with substantial environmental protection and eventual monetary savings
  • RFI for Energy to explore new opportunities for conservation, generation, and sustanability strategies.
  • The Mercury Switch By-Law to ensure proper disposal of this toxic substance when old autos are dismantled for recycling
  • Energy Star Standards for all residential subdivisions built in our community – to ensure greenhouse gas emissions continue to be reduced substantially in the future, thus protecting and enhancing the environment for future generations to enjoy
  • The Source Separated Organics Program – launched in September 2007 to encourage residents to further reduce the amount of waste that is directed to landfill sites
  • Enhanced Blue Box pick up - launched in September 2007 to encourage residents to recycle more and further reduce the amount of waste that is directed to landfill sites
  • Official Plan Review - to ensure sustainability as growth continues to occur in our community
  • “Shop Local – Eat Local” program - to cut down on greenhouse gases when products have to be shipped long distances
  • Town-Wide Litter Clean Up - Residents, businesses and organizations participate in annual litter clean up.
  • Energy Retrofit on our facilities to ensure maximum energy savings
  • Education Programs on energy reduction for our residents
