Mayor Jamie Young started his political career at the age 19 when he was elected to Council in 1994. In 2000 he was elected Mayor and has continued in this position to-date. His 13 years on Council have given him a wealth of knowledge concerning the issues facing municipalities during rapid growth and urban development. Under his leadership, Council has created unique policies that will help protect and enhance the environment while maintaining the delicate rural/urban charm the Town has become known for.
Recently the Town of East Gwillimbury demonstrated its environmental commitment by becoming the first Municipality in Canada to adopt Town-wide Energy Star® standards for new residential development. This significant precedent-setting policy will ensure green house gas emissions are significantly reduced, home owners realize savings, and burden on our straining energy infrastructure is reduced. The Town has also become a national leader in environmentally conscious building by adopting the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, also known as the LEED certification program, for all industrial commercial institutions being built in this town.
As a member of Regional Council and Chair of Administration, Mayor Young has found an exciting and intriguing new frontier for East Gwillimbury. Mayor Young has been at the forefront of partnerships with the Region with things such as a fully integrated transit system, emergency dispatch system, aggressive waste diversion programs and sound economic planning and administration policies to name a few. Mayor Young is also a member of York Region’s Finance and Administration Committee and is the Region's representative on the Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority Board of Directors.
Jamie, his wife Heather, and new daughter Cally, live in the Community of Holland Landing. Both Jamie and Heather have lived in East Gwillimbury for all of their lives and plan to remain here and raise their family for many years to come.
