Historic Sharon Temple to host Gwillimbury Quilt Guild exhibition

Historic Sharon Temple to host Gwillimbury Quilt Guild exhibition

For the first time, historic Sharon Temple will host the Gwillimbury Quilt Guild for a two-day quilting exhibition September 18 and 19.

More than 250 quilts and other quilted treasures handmade by members will be on display at “Quilts in the Temple,” in the majestic Sharon Temple.

“With a rich collection of quilts and textiles, Sharon Temple is the ideal venue for this historic show,” says Astrid Condon, President of the Gwillimbury Quilt Guild. “The Temple and the quilts both help tell the story of our community, from the early 19th Century right up until today.”

Quilts, wall hangings, pillows and clothing are just some of the unique items that will be on display in five historic buildings on the grounds of Sharon Temple, which was built in 1832 by the Children of Peace, an independent 19th-Century Christian movement.

At Quilts in the Temple, you can see works in progress, check out live demonstrations, take a peek at the block of the month pattern and kids can make their own paper quilts.

Included in the exhibition will be the historic “Rose of Sharon” quilt, which is more than 190 years old.

Come see how and why the centuries-old tradition of quilting has not only survived, but thrived.

Quilts in the Temple will piece together past and present to help tell the story of our community — one block at a time.
