Safety Tips for Motorists

As students prepare to go back to school, here are some important motorist safety tips for school zones!

  • Follow all speed limits and signage such as “no parking” and “no stopping.”Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and never use a handheld device.
  •  Look for children and crossing guards at all crosswalks. Wait for the third whistle to indicate it is safe to drive.
  • Always stop for school buses that are pulled over with flashing lights. You can not move until the red lights have stopped flashing and the STOP arm is retracted.

School Crossing Safety Tips

Remember to follow the three whistles when crossing the street:

  • 1st Whistle - Stops traffic to ensure it is safe to cross.
  • 2nd Whistle - Indicates it is now safe for you to cross the road.
  • 3rd Whistle - Indicates you have safely crossed the road and traffic can resume.

Be sure to walk across the road in a quick, orderly fashion – never run and pay attention to all of the crossing guard’s instructions. Always walk your bike or scooter across the road and hold onto any toys!

Covid-19 Safety Tips

All crossing guards will be wearing vests, masks/face shields, gloves and using handheld whistles and stops signs to direct cars. Please follow all sidewalk markings and keep 2 metres from crossing guards and others on the sidewalk.
